CNN —Catherine, Princess of Wales, has revealed she has cancer and is undergoing preventative chemotherapy after weeks of speculation over her health and absence from the public eye. She has become all the more important to the British royals since Harry and Meghan quit as senior royals, Prince Andrew became engulfed in scandal, and the death of Queen Elizabeth II. CNN —A proposed format change could shake-up the long jump at major track and field competitions, but will the idea take flight? That’s the big question for those involved in athletics right now, notably nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis. The new format, which has been put forward by World Athletics chief executive Jon Ridgeon, could see athletes jump from a take-off zone, rather than a take-off board, essentially doing away with foul jumps. “The long jump is the most difficult event in track and field,” Lewis said in a separate post. Judges inspect the take-off board at the 2012 London Olympics.

(AP) — Oakland considered a resolution to call for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war on Monday, potentially joining nearly a dozen other U.S. cities from Michigan to Georgia that have supported the same. The resolution before the Oakland City Council also calls for the unrestricted entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza and a restoration of basic services, as well as “respect for international law” and the release of all hostages. A temporary cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, which Qatar helped broker, is currently in place. “It raises an interesting question on where they are getting this mandate to speak for the people in their city when nobody elected a city council person because of their stance on Middle East peace,” he said. Now, city councils are just the latest arena where intense debates over the war and the United States' support for Israel are playing out.

Bill Perkins, who for 24 years as a legislator from Harlem championed his community — by, among other things, challenging Donald J. Trump’s aggressive demand for the death penalty when five teenagers, who were later exonerated, were arrested in connection with a rape in Central Park in 1989 — died on Tuesday at his home in Manhattan. His death was announced by his wife, Pamela Green Perkins. She did not give a cause, but Mr. Perkins had undergone treatment for colon cancer and, according to Richard Fife, a family spokesman, had developed dementia. In 1989, when five Black and Hispanic teenagers were charged with the rape of a white jogger in Central Park, Mr. Perkins was among the first Black civic leaders to publicly raise questions about the evidence and to suggest that there had been a rush to judgment. At the time he was president of the tenants’ association of Schomburg Plaza, the Manhattan apartment complex where several of the defendants lived.

The AB1 autonomous bus service will travel on a route in Scotland, with vehicles able to hit a top speed of 50 miles per hour. The U.K.'s first full-sized autonomous bus service opened to the general public on Monday, with those involved in the project describing it as a milestone for the sector. In an announcement toward the end of last week, Stagecoach described the launch as an "important milestone for autonomous technology." The company added that AB1 was "believed to be the first registered bus service in the world to use full sized autonomous buses." A fleet of five buses will be involved, traveling in mixed traffic at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour.
